The Poetry Friday Party is Here!

Janet (Wong) and I are excited to host Poetry Friday today! As kids and teachers and librarians head back to school, we wish everyone a wonderful year full of learning and laughter and poetry! To get us rolling, here's one of my favorites from our anthology, GREAT Morning! Poems for School Leaders to Read Aloud (Pomelo Books, 2018). This one's by a newcomer who is already making a BIG name for herself, Traci Sorell.

I'm excited that I'll finally get to meet Traci at the upcoming IBBY regional conference and I hope you'll join me there! (IBBY = International Board on Books for Young People and USBBY is the US section of this global group.) It's one of my favorite professional development events of the year (or every other year since it's biennial)! It's a small event with an intimate feel-- almost like a literature "retreat." And each of the speakers (authors, illustrators, poets) mix and mingle with the conference-goers. Most stay for the whole conference and become part of the audience too. It's lovely! And best of all, this is a group that looks at literature with a global focus, so meaningful in helping us think beyond our own borders. I hope you'll consider joining us! Here's the link for more info.

Best of all, there are heaps of poets who will be at the conference! Look at this list (below)!  So, make plans to come to Austin, Texas in October and you won't regret it!

Now please use the handy InLinkz button below to add your Poetry Friday link and Janet and I'll be visiting your blogs all weekend long! Happy Poetry Friday, one and all!

  1. Sylvia and Janet, thanks so much for hosting this week. One of the things that's so special about your books is how you welcome new poets into the world of published work. As a librarian, I find Traci's poem just perfect! This week, my Sunday Night Swaggers are sharing poems from the same prompt. Have fun seeing all the ways we responded to the prompt.

  18. Sylvia and Janet, I fell asleep reading your post and never got to add my post so bright and early I woke. I am going to send out tweets with info on Great Morning and this Poetry Friday party. Great Morning is such a must-read for the back to school classrooms and principal's offices. I am so glad to be a part of that story and able to share the good news. Thanks for hosting PF today. See you at NCTE19.

  32. Thanks for hosting this week. And thanks for sharing Traci's poem. It made me smile--I've always been a lover of libraries (well, maybe not always, but as soon as I learned to read). And the conference sounds amazing! I wish I could come. Can't wait to hear more about it.

  33. Thanks so much for hosting, you two! It's always a GREAT MORNING over here, and I'm sure Traci's poem helps make mornings great in school hallways, too! :0) Have a fabulous, inspiring time at IBBY. (I did not manage a post this week, as we're still out of town after evacuating from Hurricane Dorian. Have heard our house looks fine, and our little town was very fortunate despite the close brush with Dorian, who was a Cat 3 just off our coast. Keeping so many affected in our hearts and prayers.) XO

  34. So many joys to think of, in uncovering what new books are on exhibit in the school library.
    Book talks and parades.
Lots and lots of poem-reading, story-acting, days.

Appreciations for sharing a poet new to me & for all the October Auxtin TX IBBY conference goodness.
You all Get Your Poet Boots ON!! Will look forward to the posts/articles/blogs/photos that flow forth from that one.

With thanks for hosting us, too.
My Sept. 6 post will appear soon once I wiggle some photos into place at Bookseedstudio.

  35. Hi Janet & Sylvia.
It is like opening a book box in the mail, to learn of a new poet - appreciations for the intro to Traci & her joyful words

And high fives for the upcoming October poetry party at IBBY in Texas. It gives me a glow to know I have
books of many of the presenters & have even met & call Friend, some of them. What a welcoming world
Poetry Friday/Children's Literature is. I will be with you all in Spirit.

    Happy Sunday.

  37. Hey, y'all! Janet and I are so grateful to be part of this beautiful Poetry Friday community! Thanks so much for linking all your awesome posts and for pausing to comment too. You're all so lovely and generous and we appreciate your kind words! In a world that can be so difficult, this Poetry Friday light is such beacon! Thanks again!

  38. YES, thank you, everyone, for your comments. I loved visiting your blogs and reading about poetry swaps, "womanity," Hildegard and nun puffs, and snakes . . . and Snakes , , , and SNAKES!!! (I am very afraid of snakes--and still found your poems fascinating.) How can we bring more people to the Poetry Friday community? Let's work on that--with our tweets, shares, mentions, and "old-fashioned" emails!!!
